It’s Native American Heritage Month! Plus Read-Alouds

Here on the Club Experience Blog we are thrilled to join with BGCA and our Native Services Unit to celebrate Native American Heritage Month during November. The amazing work that the Native Services team and our Clubs that serve Native Youth do has been one of my favorite parts of the Movement to learn about.

Boys & Girls Clubs in Indian Country serve nearly 90,000 Native youth, and represent nearly 90 different American Indian, Alaska Native and Hawaiian tribal communities. They assist Clubs in adapting BGCA programs and curricula to their local context, as well as preserving and educating about cultural traditions.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will bring you posts from Native Clubs, including ideas to use in your program and stories from the field. You can also spend a few moments on the Native Services Unit website at www.naclubs.org to learn more about their work. Be sure to look at the Club Spotlights to read highlights from across the country. The Program Resources page gives links to lots of other sites to learn more. Also, subscribe to this blog at the bottom of the page so that you don’t miss a single post this month!

To kick us off and give you a great start to your own celebration, here is a list of Native American folktale picture books that you can use in your Club. Remember- books aren’t just for the education room! You can use these folktales to introduce an art project or a game in any area of your Club.

Stay tuned for the rest of November, and don’t forget to subscribe to posts at the bottom of the page!

What are your favorite cultural resources to use in your Club? Let us know in the comments or email at ClubXBlog@bgca.org and YOU could be featured on the Club Experience Blog!
