Cozy Ideas for Afterschool Programs

Have you seen the “cozy aesthetic” on Tiktok or Instagram? It’s part of a series of trends where content creators curate a specific design theme and feature it in their videos. These may just be images of lifestyles they aspire to, or it might feature décor, fashion, or hobbies in their real lives. There’s nothing particularly new about making these kind of design choices and sticking to them, just a shift in how young people share them. My fellow Millennials may remember the amount of deep thought to choose your MySpace wallpaper, and even more importantly which song played for visitors checking your Top 8. Nothing is new!

The cozy aesthetic, closely related to “cottagecore” and “dark academia,” is all about creating spaces that feel like a big, cozy nest, full of soft blankets, twinkling lights, and plush pillows. Think warm, neutral colors, fuzzy textures, and inviting nooks that practically beg you to curl up with a good book or a hot cup of cocoa. There’s a whole world of cozy games and books that are low stakes and minimal drama. It’s a trend that celebrates the joy of simple pleasures, encouraging you to slow down, unwind, and embrace a little bit of everyday magic in your life.

You can bring cozy to the Club with these activities and décor ideas that I think could work afterschool. And if you have ideas that have already worked, send them to me at ClubXBlog@bgca.org so I can add them to the list!

Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) is a Danish word that you often see associated with the winter months. It’s a concept that is about being cozy and comfortable, a warm atmosphere and being with those you love. Even though a lot of the picture links are broken, I like this list of bringing hygge to a classroom. Be wary of the scents and certain plants though, in case of allergies.

I can say from experience that calm instrumental music, soft lighting (as long as it is safe), and a read aloud are GREAT ideas. I used to run a calm block during summer in my program space for kids who may need a break.

This list from ClubX favorite WeAreTeachers has some similar ideas, but I really love the cozy sock and slipper day and nature walk ideas. It says the list is for winter, but all of these could be done in the summer as well. Even the hot chocolate!

We’ve talked before about making Calm Corners or other similar spaces in the Club for youth who may need to take a break. This post from a Boys & Girls Club staff outlines how she created her space on a small budget. Club staff can also access activities around Emotional Wellness and Stress Management on MyFuture and Club Programs.

Crafts and activities around mindfulness or self care also often fit into the cozy bucket. Several of the activities here for older youth would all work well in a Club setting.

One cornerstone of the cozy aesthetic is working with your hands, and experiencing new textures of cloth and materials. Traditional handcrafts would fit here, and could be a way to involve some local community artisans. These weaving crafts would be a fun start for knitting or crocheting.

One way to integrate coziness into games, whether physical or digital, is to find some where cooperation is key. This is also a great idea to encourage participation for youth who may not be competitive, or to support building teamwork skills. This first list gives a couple of gym activities, the second is primarily board games to purchase, and the last is a list of video games in case you have consoles in your gamesroom. Be sure to check all for content and age-appropriateness before purchasing.

Finally, these ClubX Blog posts are filled with other cozy craft ideas!
